Johan Muyle
Oeuvres/Works 1982-2020
Accompanying the retrospective exhibition No Room for Regrets that the MACS is devoting to Johan Muyle, this important monograph traces the career of the Belgian visual artist from his first assemblies of objects to his monumental paintings and on to his motorised sculptures. In a series of thematic chapters, the work presents many unpublished documents together with an essay that situates Muyle’s work within the political and artistic context of the past thirty years. To account for the polymorphic nature of his work, the book analyses several aspects of this prolific artist’s thinking on visual art, taking us from the situationist poetry of his first tracts to his exotic and syncretic aesthetic inspired by his many travels around the world and, more recently, to his recycling of the codes of popular art.
