The collection of the Museum of Contemporary Arts of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation at Grand-Hornu was started in 1999. It contains some 450 works of art by 150 Belgian and foreign artists.
Its aim is to develop a representative whole of all the major current trends, whilst retaining a strong resonance with the site where they are conserved, at Grand-Hornu.
Les Registres du Grand-Hornu, an impressive installation created by the French artist Christian Boltanski, inaugurated this collection in 1997. Since then, the collection has been built up around several themes: place, poetry and memory.
Like a library of works of art, the collection is not on permanent display at Grand-Hornu, but contributes to numerous collaborations, through loans with Belgian and foreign institutions.
